"A special type of self-association of macromolecules is investigated that leads to creation of nanoparticles in a liquid environment (water, organic solvents, liquid mixtures). Nanoparticles are created by a change in an external parameter, usually temperature or pH. Short-range attraction and long-range repulsion are required for controlled self-association. Various physical interactions are used to provide the short-range attraction: hydrogen bonding, thermoresponsive association of polypeptides, selective sorption of incompatible solvents to diblock copolymers. Long-range repulsion is provided by the incompatibility between the blocks and/or incompatibility of blocks with the surrounding liquid. The repulsion depends on external variables. Polymeric nanoparticles can be created permanently or be reversibly disassembled by an inverse change of the external stimulus. They can also be permanently disassembled by degradation.
