"The aim of this fundamentally directed research project is the theoretical and experimental investigation of intense laser-matter interaction with foam and layered targets. (a) Line x-ray emission from low-density foams containing medium or higher Z element (e.g. chlorine) will be used for diagnostics of laser absorption, plasma formation and thermal transport in low-density porous matter. (b) Low-density foam material will be used as a tamper that reduces expansion of heated solid material. The parameters of the generated dense warm intermediately coupled plasmas will be derived from accurately measured line shapes and shifts of selected resonant transitions and their dielectronic satellites. (c) The absolutely calibrated K-a emission spectra from layered targets will be analyzed in order to map the distribution of fast electrons and charge state abundance.
