"Spatial degrees of freedom of light will be mastered for the purpose of classical and quantum communications and information processing. Optical beams with phase singularities -- optical vortices -- will be adapted for encoding, transmission, and decoding of information by means of spatial beam shaping. Free space communication using non-diffracting beams will be studied theoretically and experimentally. Optimal methods for characterizing spatial degrees of light will be proposed and the information content of the vortex beams analyzed. Superpositions of vortices will be used for theoretical analysis and experimental realization of higher-dimensional systems of the orbital momentum of a photon.
