"We propose detailed atomic-scale study of heteroepitaxial growth of metals on Si surfaces based on using an advanced experimental approach: direct observation of the surface processes (in-vivo) during deposition by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The approach provides information on dynamics of microscopic processes which can not be obtained by in-situ STM measurements used so far. Changing rates of the processes by control of growth conditions (deposition rates, substrate temperature) allows to evaluate the role of mechanisms involved. Sequences of STM images will be utilized for growth models, which will be verified using kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations of growth characteristics.
