"Ionising radiation induces fluorescent radiation when passing through the air. The fluorescence originates mainly from excitations of molecular nitrogen and its intensity depends on the temperature, pressure and chemical composition - e.g. on the presence of water vapour. The air fluorescence is today used in cosmic ray physics and other possibilities of are emerging, e.g. nondestructive monitoring of charged particle beams, which are increasingly used in industrial and medical applications. Knowing the intensity of the fluorescent light, one can measure with relatively high precision the intensity of the primary ionising radiation. With increasing number of applications, the demands on precision of such measurement are becoming stricter. Atthis point the insufficient knowledge of the fluorescence yield at different thermodynamical conditions becomes an obstacle.
