The effect of ambient pressure and plasma jet generation conditions on characteristics of the jet will be investigated. A transition between several flow regimes from the subsonic flow at atmospheric pressure to the strongly supersonic under-expanded jet at low pressures will be studied and a flow pattern, formation of shock waves, plasma velocities, plasma composition, electron densities and temperatures will be determined. Correlations between plasma properties and gas dynamic flow characteristics will be analyzed. Interaction of the jets with solid surfaces will be investigated. The experiments will be performed for high arc powers up to 120 kW using plasma torches with cylindrical and convergent/divergent nozzles.
