"The goal of the project is to develop, build and characterize a pulsed homodyne detection scheme suitable for analysis of weak optical fields at the energy level of few photons per pulse. A compact laboratory apparatus is planned to be constructed that will subsequently be used for exploration of correlated photon fields obtained by parametric frequency down-conversion and for noise reduction of the quantum states of light. That way, the range of detection techniques available in the laboratories of the applicant's institution will be substantially widened and the homodyne detection system will suitably complement photon number detection techniques developed in previous years.
