"The primary aim of this project is to understand and (into some extend even) %22control%22 excitation and radiation processes of multiply charged ions in pulse high-current discharges. The range of interest falls into soft X-ray (tens of nanometers) region.First we shall investigate the excitation of neon-like Ar8+, the energy levels of which are plausible for achievement of population inversion. The experimental data will be provided mainly by time-resolved soft X-ray spectroscopy - with survey flat fieldspectrograph for the range 10-110 nm and with high resolution grazing incidence spectrograph for the ranges 1-70nm or 1-310nm - depending on the grating used. Comparison of these data with outputs of combined MHD & kinetic modelling should result notonly in scaling laws relating radiation characteristics of the discharge with its main parameters (inclusive its initial and boundary conditions), but also in enhancement of radiation efficiency.
