"The proposed project is focused on fundamental research of quasi two-dimensional ultrathin films, multilayers and nanostructures of magnetic metals and oxides. The scientific goal is a deeper understanding of the relations between the preparation conditions of the structures investigated and their physical properties. The new research will result in the identification of parameters controlling properties relevant to magnetic recording media, sensors and new magnetic devices. The project makes useof experimental magneto-optic facilities (original set-up with accuracy in ellipsometric angle measurements of 0.1 milidegree at photon energies from 1.2 to 5.7 eV) and computer modeling of optical interactions in ultrathin magnetic structures. It is enhanced by a systematic international cooperation with universities in Paris, Versailles and Kaiserslautern.
