"The project is focused on the development of transparent polycrystalline ceramics for ballistic and high-temperature applications with high in-line transmission in the visible and infrared regions, and improved mechanical properties. The ceramics based on alumina, spinel and tetragonal zirconia will be investigated. High transparency and improved mechanical properties of transparent ceramics will be achieved by microstructural refinement of dense sintered ceramics. Colloidal processing of ceramic nanopowders and doping them with appropriate additives will be applied in order to prepare uniformly and tightly packed green bodies that can be sintered into fully dense bodies with grain size in the submicrometre to nanometre range. Gelcasting will be used as the main consolidation and shaping method for large and complex bodies. The influence of microstructural characteristics of the prepared transparent ceramics on the in-line transmission in the visible and infrared regions and on the mechanical properties relevant to ballistic and high-temperature applications will be investigated."@en .
