"Lead in copper components which are in contact with drinking water releases from their surface and contributes to the increase of lead content in drinking water. The project proposed is evoked by the need of detailed fundamental research aimed at findingpossibilities to replace lead containing machinable copper alloys by alloys not containing toxic lead with comparable properties. The effect of selected non-toxic elements (Bi, Se, In and others) in combination with the remaining alloying elements in the systems Cu-Sn and Cu-Zn on second-phase formation, nature and morphology will be studied. The inffuence of structural parameters on chip forming and separation during machining will be investigated. Modifications of phase composition and alloy structure which guarantee good machinability (comparable with lead bearing alloys) will be looked for by investigating the effect of alloy composition and thermo-mechanical treatment modifications.
