This is not only because of advantageous prices but also because of the undoubtedly better properties of castings (mechanical prop., surface finish, close tolerances). Designers mistrust of castings ioften due to castings not having good qualities from the viewpoint of defects (surface defects, porosity, inclusions) and being inclined to cracks and fissures. Applying solidification simulation and expert system for predicting microstructure can help tremove this mistrust. The project basis is establishing geometry data of structural components and thermophysical data. Indispensable is the knowledge of specific properties of given alloys and temperature conditions.
