"Brittle fracture is the most damaging way of materials failure, as all available mechanical energy is concentrated at the tip of a growing crack. The aim of this interdisciplinary project is the prevention of brittle fracture in selected structural thermoplastics based on polypropylene and polyamides. This goal could be achieved by two ways: By elimination detrimental loading modes and/or avoiding materials that under given conditions may develop brittle fracture. The both routes will be followed ithe research project. As the resistance of a certain material structure against crack propagation can depend on the loading conditions, the project will include fracture tests with markedly different test speeds as well as a complex structural characterization of the materials.
