"The project is focused on the preparation and study of the properties of nanocomposites synthesized by innovative methods. First, inorganic clay, montmorillonite, will be exfoliated in a solution of cellulose diacete polymer functionalized with appropriate reactive groups. The tailored clay prepared in this way will be subsequently used as the atom-transfer radical polymerization macroinitiator acting through the introduced reactive groups. The method enables us to prepare nanocomposites with a wide spectrum of polymer matrices with pre-determined structure, molecular parameters and topology suitable for various applications of nanocomposites. The synthesized nanocomposites can be applied e.g. as upgrading additives for commodity plastics (polycarbonate, high-impact polystyrene) or as a part of dental materials to enhance mechanical properties of commonly used polymethacrylate resins. Moreover, the matrices with a block copolymer structure can be prepared, which will impart higher stiffness and toughness to the materials.
