"The project is focused on assessments of passive state stability in high alloy corrosion resistant materials and on the related resistance thereof to localized types of corrosion, especially to pitting corrosion. Fundamental research will center upon austenitic and austeno-ferritic corrosion resistant steels and upon nickel base alloys modified with molybdenum, nitrogen, tungsten, and possibly copper. Susceptibility to localized forms of corrosion attack will be studied in relation to heat treatment,heat exposure, and structure of these materials. Stability of the passive state will be evaluated based on immersion tests and electrochemical polarization measurements as well as on analytical techniques and metallographic examinations of passive films and structural modifications.
