"Most of components in engineering structures are subjected to multiaxial fatigue loading. The main aim of the project is to identify, using the 3D quantitative fractography and metallography, the details of both the crack front shape and crack path developing under in-phase and out-of-phase biaxial fatigue loading. Unlike in uniaxial fatigue, the application of those 3D methods to multiaxial fatigue problems is generally still in a pioneering stage. Exactly this approach is necessary since the extreme tortuosity of the crack front and diversity of local crack propagation directions under biaxial loading causes that information obtained by means of standard 2D fractography is highly insufficient. The advanced methods based on stereophotogrammetry and chromatic aberration will be used to obtain an extended set of morphological characteristics as e.g., profile and surface roughness, fractal dimensions or mismatches of stereopairs.
