"The aim of this project is to optimize the modifying process of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) leading to an increase in wear resistance while keeping other relevant properties of the material at the acceptable level. The modification will be performed by ionizing radiation. Structural changes of the polymer will be controlled by combination of radiation type (gamma rays, accelerated electrons), radiation dose, dose rate, exposition conditions and thermal treatment. An important part of the project are isolation, identification and characterisation of UHMWPE particles, obtained both from osteoaggressive granuloma during reoperation of the prostheses (in vivo) and from joint simulators (in vitro). This will necessitate further optimization of the new method for determination of numbers of particles, which has been introduced at the applican\u0165s laboratory recently.
