"Microstructure refinement in metallic materials provides substantial increase in strength with less significant decrease in ductility at low temperatures. Materials with grain size in the ultrafine range, i.e. of the size of 1 um or less exhibitfrequently superplastic behaviour at elevated temperatures. Ultrafine-grained materials can be produced by severe plastic deformation with true strains > 6 - 8. The severe plastic deformation techniques have two important advantages as compared withother processes of micro structure refinement: 1) they avoid material oxide contamination; 2) they are capable to produce bulk ultrafine-grained materials with no porosity. Therefore, severe plastic deformation is the most appropriate process forindustrial applications.
