"The proposed grant objective examines the possibility of using new and progressive types of thin films in the field of cutting tools. The PVD method consisting in reactive low-voltage arc cathode evaporation in vacuum will be utilized to create the investigated films. Not only will they be the TiN thin films but also multi-layer films composed of chemically different nitrides and a 200-layer film of a repeating pattern. Sintered carbide will be used as substrate. With regard to using various types of films it will be necessary to rely on analyses describing mechanical properties when determining the optimal deposition parameters. Among those properties the most important ones are nanohardness, adhesive-cohesive behaviour and tribological properties. As new types of films will be analyzed it will be necessary to optimize or even develop new techniques for investigation of their properties.
