Heat source that caused the thermal and oxidative alteration of 130million tons of coal (which can not be used for energetic purpose)is not yet known. This coal is also subject to spontaneous heating what is linked with big economic loss and endanger of work safety. Laboratory experiments, detail study of composition of altered .coal and mathematical modelling of alteration process would verify or reject the hypothese about origin of this alteration in consequences of underground fires (Cretaceous-Jura).In laboratory the alteration will be simulated at various conditions (temperature, time, partial pressure of oxygen etc.).Comparison of characteristics of laboratory altered coal with that one deposited in close contact with red bed bodies enables conclude about the condition of alteration..
