"The project is focused on the basic research in the hydrodynamic interactions between the phases in gas-liquid reactors and contactors. These interactions are very complex and cover a wide range of length and time scales. They also determine the resulting behaviour of the whole multiphase system. The basic idea of the project is to decompose the hydrodynamic processes according to their length scales, to understand them separately in their isolation, and, armed with this knowledge, to develop a model for the behaviour of the whole bubbly layer. The typical length scales are: microscale (~ bubble size), mesoscale (~ bubble cluster size) and macroscale (~ apparatus size). The typical processes associated with these scales are: bubble formation atsubmerged orifices, cluster formation and dynamics, and the overall flow regime in the equipment.
