"It has been known from the literature that the upper limit for the operation of counter-current gas/liquid columns is the flooding point. Exceeding the flooding point limit either by an increase of gas or liquid velocity results in an entrainment ofliquid that is ejected at the top of the bed with subsequent hazard for the operation as a whole. It has been also known that in the proximity of the flooding point the coefficients of interfacial mass and heat transfer markedly increase as a consequenceof dramatic increase of intensity of interactions between the flowing phases. With the development of the flooding, however, the hydrodynamic regime of the column breaks down accompanied by drastic deterioration of the efficiency of the process and theeconomy of the operation. As part of our basic research we have found that the dynamics of transition of the hydrodynamic regime toward flooding is different from that of recovery of the state existing prior to the flooding.
