"Bentonite-type materials are at present primarily important in two respects: they belong among major components of river and lake sediments and their interactions with the aqueous phase significantly affect the state of environmental pollution by inorganic and organic species; furthermore, they are hot candidates for the role of backfills in planned deep repositories for radioactive wastes. Therefore, their mechanical and physico-chemical properties have recently been widely studied from these points of view by geologists, chemists and technologists. There is a great volume of data on the properties of these materials, but these data are scattered in the literature, obtained under widely varying conditions and related to a great variety of real geological species.
