"The aim of the project is to develop a new class of radiofrequency- and field-gradient pulse sequences for chemical-shift-selective presaturation of water magnetization in clinical in vivo 1H MR spectroscopy and spectroscopic imaging, such that after the saturation a precisely defined small amount (about 1%) of the longitudinal magnetization of water remains. This relaxation-time and spin-density dependent magnetization will be exploited as an internal reference for corrections of the distortions of in vivo 1H MR spectra occuring due to a variety of experimental instabilities, for anatomic image segmentation, and as an internal concentration standard. Sensitivity of the reference water signal to RF- and static magnetic field inhomogeneities will be minimized. The effects on the accuracy and reliability of brain metabolite quantification will be examined. Acquisition of the water signal simultaneously with the signals of metabolites will improve the quality and reliability of spectral analysis and will substantially reduce experimental costs of chemical-shift-imaging experiments."@en .
