"Passing through a certain critical sliding speed in the sliding contact with friction leads to the origination of so-called thermoelastic instability. This manifests itself as a distrubance of uniform contact pressure and rise of macroscopic hot spots onthe contact surface. The proposed project is focussed both on the mathematical modelling of this phenomenon and on conduction of suitable experiments and on comparing of both approaches. Attention is payed to the influence of individual material and shape parameters on the magnitude of the critical sliding speed at conditions of intermittent contact. Focuss is also given to a careful performace of experiments and the knowledge in their parameters.The occurence of thermoelastic instability representsa very negative effect in many important technical systems, for example vehicle disc brakes or clutches.
