Although UHMWPE is regarded as the best possible material for this purpose, it is also considered the life-limiting factor of TJR's. This is caused by the phenomenon called wear, which results in release of bilions of microscopic wear particles every year. Firstly, the volume of the polymer reduces and secondly, the tiny wear particle initiate complex inflammatory reactions around TJR. The goals of this projects are WEAR MONITORING (i.e. the determination of numbers of wear particles around TJR) and WEAR MINIMIZATION (i.e. the development, testing and production of highly crosslinked UHMWPE with improved wear resistance). Originality of thisproject in the field of wear minimization consists in that there is almost no information about distribution of wear particles around TJR, which is caused by the difficulties in sampling, isolation and quantification of wear particles.
