"Expression and secretion of adipokines in gluteal and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) will be investigated and compared in a group of 18 obese women. Samples of SAT will be obtained by needle biopsy taken in baseline conditions and after energy-restricted diet. Relationship between the markers of endocrine function in both fat depots and indices of metabolic syndrome (MS) will be assessed . In addition, responses of adipokine expression and secretion to various stimuli (hypoxia, ER stress) will be investigated in tissue cultures derived from the two above-mentioned depots of SAT . The aims are: 1. to establish differences in expression and secretion of relevant adipokines in abdominal vs. gluteal SAT; 2. evaluate the relationship between adipokine expression in the two SAT depots and indices of MS; 3. to explore, in tissue cultures, mechanisms underlying the eventual differences in expression and secretion of adipokines in the two subcutaneous tissues."@en .
