The topic originates from findings showing that in natural environment microorganisms (including yeasts) do not exist as individual cells but form organised populations capable of mutual communication and communication with other organisms, of signalling and of efficient adaptation and protection against environmental attack. This highly topical subject is in the forefront of international science because of attractive fundamental findings as well as important practical applications (e.g. biofilms in medicine and interaction of pathogenic yeast with human tissues).
