"The aim of the project is to assess the dependency of urban systems on surrounding environment together with the impacts of urban metabolism on ecosystems and biodiversity. The project builds on the concept of socio-economic and urban metabolism and is focused on complex interrelationship between environmental pressures and ecosystem services, including the maintenance of biodiversity. The basic research paradigm is that of environmental sustainability, which means the balance of urbanized systems withtheir long term environmental resource base. The urban metabolism will be assessed by the means of environmental accounting, especially by the analysis of energy and material flows and by the calculation of urban footprint expressed as an appropriation ofbiologically productive area.
