Bridging a spinal cord lesion with hydrogels is a promising method in experimental therapy. Hydrogels are biocompatible synthetic porous polymers. Based on our previous studies, hydrogels adhere well to spinal cord tissue, bridge and reduce the volume of the posttraumatic cavity, reduce spinal cord atrophy, and improve functional results in laboratory rats. The goal of the project is to evaluate whether bridging a spinal cord lesion with 2 types of hydrogels (with or without oriented pores) in a model of complete spinal cord injury, when the tracts are completely disconnected, promotes the regeneration of axons across the lesion, which is impossible without treatment. The results will be evaluated using behavioural tests (motor and sensory), electrophysiology (evoked potentials) and especially morphologically (retro- and anterograde staining and immunohistochemical methods).
