We have developed a model to investigate the role of adipose tissue in the development of insulinresistance associated with dietary obesity. Both, C57BL/6J (B6) and AKR/J inbred strains of mice are prone to the development of obesity when fed a high fat diet. AKR/J mice fed this diet are less sensitive-to insulin than B6. Accordingly, although thecontent of glucose transporter GLUT4 in adipose tissue was reduced in both strains, it was 3-fold lower in AKR/J mice than in B6.
