"Shape memory NiTi micro wires exhibit excellent mechanical and functional properties due to a nanograin microstructure created as a result of sever plastic deformation from cold drawing and subsequent thermal treatment. Textile processing provides a way to transfer these properties to complex 2D structures. There is a large variety of methods for integrating the functional metallic NiTi micro filaments into textile fabrics which are called smart textiles. Within this project a collaborative research will be carried out covering all aspects of development and characterization of such novel NiTi textile structures. Firstly, it involves material research on the thermal treatment and characterization of NiTi micro wires. Then issues related to the textile processing and morphology are to be addressed to find structural designs of NiTi textiles ensuring that the functional behaviour of NiTi micro wires is efficiently inherited and additional functions are obtained.
