"Increasing knowledge of biochemical and genetic bases of the metabolism of various environmental pollutants facilitates the development of bacterial strains for bioremediation using methods of recombinant DNA technology. Although the methods and tools developed in this project might be used for biodegradation of a wider range of xenobiotics by various bacterial strains, improvement of phenol degradation potential of a Rhodococcus strain, whose degradative capability has already been shown, will be theparticular aim. To achieve this objective, three main aspects of the biodegradation studies will be addressed: l. The properties of the strain will be improved by metabolic engineering based on the genetic analysis of the biodegradative patway and use ofthe tools of gene manipulations. 2. The advantages of the biofilm formation by the microorganism, namely resistance to higher concentrations of the toxic pollutants and higher rate of biodegradation, will be utilised. 3.
