"The primary objective of the project is to understand some of the basic mechanisms by which plants and composting process contribute to the removal of persistent organic chemicals from soil. Perspective seems to be combination of the methods and therefore it will be evaluated as well. As target pollutants polychlorinated biphenyls and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons will be studied. Investigations will be focused on: the interaction between specific microbial populations from compost and pollutants (degradation and genetic properties of populations with different temperature origins), the interaction between plants and pollutants (how plants metabolize these pollutants), the interaction between plants and the microbes (how plants promote the microbial degradation of these pollutants and affect the diversity of soil microorganisms), plant - microbial promotion and enhancement of pollutant degradation by composting techniques.
