"Antimicrobial peptides and Toll-like receptors in ontogeny and bacterial infections"@en . "2013-12-31+01:00"^^ . . . . "Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are endogeneous substances protecting organisms against infection. Basic knowledge of them and possibility of their induction is needed due to increasing resistance of pathogenic bacteria against classical microbial antibiotics. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) recognize various microbial substances known as microbial-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs) and their expression and activation is necessary for induction of the natural immune response. The expression of selected AMPs and TLRs will be studied by RT-PCR in pig intestine in prenatal and early postnatal ontogeny of the pig. The effect of fetal gut infection (after surgical intervention) and the effect of oral infection of germ-free pigs with E.coli on the expression of AMPs and TLRs will be studied. The model EPEC, a nonpathogenic and a probiotic E.coli strains will be compared. Finally, the role of birth, weaning and endogeneous gut microflora will be studied in conventional pigs."@en . .
