"Avian tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium strains is a serious disease of birds and other vertebrates including human beings. The importance of the study of these mycobacterial species started to increse in recent years especially asthe strains cause 50-60% of opportunic infection in AIDS patients. Despite an intensive research in this field during the last years, the genetic basis of the pathogenicity remains poorly understood. It was reported that the presence of IS901 in themycobacterial strains is associated with their virulency for birds. It is supposed, from the experiments on mice and chicken, that IS901 can enhance virulence of M. avium strains. The aims of the study is mapping sites of insertion of IS901 nad findingout genes which can contribute to virulence. As IS901 is a transposable element, which can after insertion to coding sequence change or disrupt expression of adjacent genes (position effect).
