A significant induction effect of a number of benzimidazole drugs onbiotransformation systems was observed in laboratory animals, isolated human hepatocytes, and in cell cultures. On the basis of these results there exists a reasonable suspicion that administration of benzimidazole anthelmintics to food-producing animalscan result in induction of their biotransformation enzymes with all its pharmacological and toxicological consequences. The aim of the project is to find out whether benzimidazole anthelmintics induce the main biotransformation enzymes of farm animals,to compare the extent of their induction effect with that of known model inducers, to compare the induction responses in various species of farm animals and laboratory animals.
