"Comparative analysis of the immunogenome of the family Equidae in the context of host-pathogen interactions will be performed. Allelic sequence diversity, evolution and balancing selection of the MHC DRB, DQB genes and of the KIR/Ly49 genes, encoding natural killer cell receptors will be analyzed in zebras, asses and donkeys. Furthermore, comparative analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in selected immunity-related genes will be performed in various species of zebras, asses and in two populations of domestic donkeys. Genes showing across-breed associations with virus (West Nile virus), bacterial (Rhodococcus equi) and protozoan (Trypanosoma evansi) infections will be selected for analysis. Horse-specific primers will be used for amplifying the corresponding orthologues in other equid species. The PCR products will be cloned and sequenced. SNPs identified will be used for evaluating the extent of genetic diversity and evolutionary relationships of various Equids. Chromosome evolution of Equidae with special focus on chromosome microrearrangements will be investigated."@en .
