"One of less known stress factors influencing forest health are secondary atmospheric pollutants (SAP) especially haloacetic acids (generated by atmospheric photooxidation of substances used on global scale as industrial solvents, chemical raw materials, freon substitutes etc.) having mostly significant phytotoxic effects. The best known of them, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), used in the past as herbicide, is considered as indicator of SAP and as ubiquitous. Its influence on forest decline has been reporteand TCA content in needles determined many times. Since most of the studies were carried out in nature where a number of factors play an importatnt role, there exist neither a clear explanation of the TCA influence on conifers nor the determination of threshold levels and of the dose-response relationship.
