Because of its main autecological status P. fumosoroseus (PFR) is usually considered to be an entomogenous fungus. Natural epizootic being caused by this fungus are well known among populations of various insect host pests world-wide, including Colorado potato beetle Leptinotarsa decemlineata which is one of key pests of potatoes. Furthermore, PFR is known as an important component of the complex of saprophytic micro-organisms in soil, and also as being involved in antagonistic and competitive relations between various soil fungi, including some important soil born diseases of potatoes (e.g. Rhizoctonia solani, Streptomyces scabies, Fusarium coeruleum etc.).
