"The first goal of the project is obtaining and interpretation of transcription profiles in the symbiosis between nodule bacterium Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae and pea (Pisum sativum L.). The effect of relevant environmental factors and of symbioticmutations of the host on the expression of specifically regulated genes will be monitored. Regulatory links acting at the symbiosis establishment and at the development of symbiotic nodules will be identified. The molecular markers for physiological responses detected in the first part of the project will be exploited in the second part which consists in the development of a pea line with increased nitrogen fixation. The number of symbiotic nodules should be manipulated towards a maximum nitrogen fixation with already available supernodulating mutations.
