"Bird schistosomes parasitize not only birds, but they may attack also mammals including humans. Although they are known as the agent of cercarial dermatitis, recent experiments show that, under certain circumstances, they can escape from the skin and migrate to other mammalian organs (e.g. the lungs). The risk of such migration has been underlined after discovery of a neuropathogenic schistosome, Trichobilharzia regenti. The project is focused on the development of new in vitro cultivation techniquesand their use in systematics and immunodiagnosis. The main aims are: (1) Formulate an optimal cultivation medium supporting a long-term cultivation and development of bird schistosomes to adulthood. (2) In systematics, the cultivation should enable morphological characterization of yet undetermined isolates for which the experimental animals resist infection. (3) In immunodiagnosis, the characterization of excretory-secretory and somatic (including surface) antigens should further be used in"@en .
