"The project proposes to investigate phylogeny of Lycidae focusing on clades with abundant female neoteny, as heterochrony is an important macroevolutionary mechanism. There are conflicting views on evolution of neoteny within Lycidae in existingliterature. The main objective of the project is to perform a combined analysis of nuclear 18S rRNA, mitochondrial 16S rRNA, COI and morphological data at subfamily to subtribe rank, and to propose a hypothesis on presumed phylogeny of family group taxaof Lycidae (Coleoptera). Previous analyses of individual subfamilies will be used for this task, and a synthesis of current knowledge will be accomplished. Complete sequences of genes given above will be obtained from available taxa of Lycidae (about 20taxa), plus about 5 outgroup taxa. Methods of DNA analysis based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) will be employed.
