"1"^^ . "1"^^ . . "The aim of the proposed project is to demonstrate a soft X-sray laser in the 25-50nm wavelength range, delivering - 100 uJ pulses sof duration - 100 ps. The lasing medium is a plasma column created by the impact of a linearly focused high-power infrared laser pulse onto a solid target, producing a dominantly neon-like ion species. The basis of the project is the optimisation of a two-step pumbing regime utilising a very weak prepulse preceding the main driving pulse by several nanoseconds. The results of experimental investigation of weakly ionised prepulse plasma and of detailed theoretical analysis, carried out by the applicants of this project in 1995, suggest there is a real possibility of obtaining soft-X-ray lasing in such a fashion using only 30J of pumping power on targets of atomic number 24-26. The pumping device is the iodine photodissociation laser system PERUN installed at the Institute of Physics in Prague.
