The carp is cultured in many parts of the world both within and outside its natural range as a result of human translocations. The species is phenotypically plastic, which has led to an extensive and confusing taxonomic nomenclature as well as many different zoogeographic units. The proposed project is focused on molecular and evolutionary genetics of common carp, with the special emphasis on genealogical relationships between common carp subspecies and zoogeographic units as well as on the roles of Quaternary climatic and environmental changes on migration, random genetic drift and mutation, affecting the patterns of molecular variation across contemporary and historical time scales. Using the phylogeographic framework, we shall assessed the DNA sequence variation at the mitochondrial and nuclear genes, across the distribution range of the common carp populations."@en .
