"The aim of project is to enlarge the knowledge on the low temperature effects on lichen photosynthesis. The main aim is to quantify the effect of ribitol on low temperature resistance of photosynthesis in two lichen species (Lasallia pustulata and Umbilicaria hirsuta), fotobionts resp. The aim is to test a wide range of ribitol concentration (both natural and with an addition) to evaluate a positive effects on photosynthesis at low and subzero temperatures. For each experimental temperature, we will find a minimum physiological ribitol concentration with a positive effect both on potential (FV/FM) and actual (ΦII) on primary photosynthetic processes, non-photochemical energy dissipation (NPQ, photoprotective pigment contents, antioxidants). The aim of the proposed project is also to address inter-specific differences in response to ribitol addition. Last but not least, the freezing temperature as dependent on actual ribitol content in the thallus will be determined."@en .
