"Reptiles are characterized by polyphyodont homodont dentition mostly with unicuspid or bicuspid teeth. The heterodont dentition appears in several reptilian clades. Distinctive examples are venomous snakes possessing extremely enlarged maxillary teeth with venom-conducting system (groove or canal) and anole lizards or chamaeleons holding tricuspid teeth in the distal jaw area. In contrast to mammals, the molecular mechanisms of polyphyodont and heterodont teeth development in reptiles are unknown. Our preliminary data suggest significant differences in developmental processes in comparison to mammalian species. In the propose project, we will examine molecular controls of polyphyodoncy, cusps and venom-conducting canal formation in several model species of lepidosaurian reptiles.
