"Climatic fluctuations during the Pleistocene greatly influenced distribution of organisms. The freshwater crustaceans of the Daphnia pulex species complex show evidence of Pleistocene radiation into several genetically distinct lineages. The Eastern Nearctic D. pulicaria lineage has been until now know only from Canada and Greenland with a few representatives known from Iceland and Svalbard, was identified by applicant also in the mountain lakes of the continental Europe, and showed its recent origin from North America. This phylogeographical study of the Eastern Nearctic lineage throughout its distribution in North America, arctic islands and mountain regions in Europe will identify the likely source and colonization routes and will estimate the timescale on which the genetic exchange between the continents took place.
