"The project focuses on enhanced immobilisation of cadmium (Cd) in substrate by arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM), suggested as one mechanism of decreased Cd uptake and higher Cd tolerance of AM plants in comparison with non-mycorrhizal plants. The aim is to distinguish the contribution of Cd sorption by the extraradical mycelium (ERM)of AM fungi and of AM effects on the host plant's root exudation. Tobacco, the model plant of the study, consistently responds to AM symbiosis with enhanced phosphorus uptake and decreased Cd uptake. The direct contribution of ERM to Cd immobilisation in soil will be determined by cultivation of split-root plants and the use of rhizoboxes with separated hyphal compartments. The effect of tobacco root exudates on Cd availability in soil will be described as affected by the P nutrition of tobacco and AM symbiosis. The role of the Cd concentration in substrate, the soil sorption and buffering capacity will be also assessed."@en .
