"\"The effect of glucocorticoids depends not only on the plasma level of the hormone and the number of receptors in the target cells but also on the local metabolism of glucocorticoids catalyzed by 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11HSD). This enzyme interconverts 11-hydroxy- and 11-oxo-steroids and is thus able to increase or decrease local concentration of the hormone. Two isoforms of 11HSD have been identified - type 1 operating predominantly as a reductase increasing active glucocorticoids from inactive 11-oxo derivatives and type 2 working as a dehydrogenase inactivating glucocorticoids to 11-oxo derivatives.
